I’ve just wrapped up a week long trip to our office on the banks of the Mekong River in Vientiane (Hatfield Consultants Mekong). It was unseasonably cool and pleasant, with daytime highs under 30 C – the Mekong river was low as the rains will not start until after Pi Mai (Lao New Year). Numerous dams are being built and planned for the mainstem Mekong and most major tributaries. These dams will likely have significant impact on one of the world’s great inland fisheries and the livelihoods it has sustained for millennia. I’ve been visiting Vientiane for about 25 years, and the city has grown rapidly. The government has done a great job enhancing the waterfront, which is well used it citizens and tourists, particularly in the evenings. A few shots of my week in Vientiane can be seen by clicking this link or the embedded photo.
