Shortly after Suharto was disposed, we went to Lombok for a family holiday – we stayed in a lovely beach-side resort just north of Mataram in the Senggigi Beach area. At the time the main tourist areas were fairly quiet, and for anybody with USD most things denominated in Indonesian Rupiah were quite cheap (the RP depreciated from about 3,000 Rp/USD to over 15,000 Rp/USD). Our friend Nancy Strickland from Bhutan joined us for about a week. Family photos (password protected) can be seen here. The island, like much of Indonesia is incredibly lush – a few photos of flowers taken during the trip can be seen here.
