Saturday, June 14th provided near perfect conditions for the 2014 edition of the Test of Metal, the second race in the epic “Hell of a Series” that has firmly established the Sea-to-Sky corridor as one of the premier mountain bike racing destinations in North America. In addition to excellent conditions (cool and overcast, trails neither too dusty nor too muddy), a highly competitive field resulted in very fast times. Complete race results can be found here. Local Squamish riders, lead by Greg Day (5th place), Quinn Moberg (6th place), Rhys Verner (10th place), Dwayne Kress (11th place) all put in fast times, but were beaten by the mighty Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC (1st place, 2:31), followed by Evan Guthrie and Kris Sneddon. Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops) was the first women to cross the finish line with an amazing time of 2:55, followed by Jean Ann Berkenpas and Wendy Simms. Team Squamish, coached by Mike Charuk, put in a very strong showing which bodes well for the future of competitive racing in the region. Photos taken at 4 locations (top of Thunderbird, bottom of Roller Coaster, Power House Feed Zone, and the Finish Line) can be viewed here.
