Several sitings of the Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa) prompted me to hightail down to the Squamish estuary this afternoon. Either two or three owls have been seen over the last few weeks in the estuary, a short walk from the end of Vancouver Street in downtown Squamish. This is the largest owl found in North America, and according to Peterson Field Guides is a “dusky grey, heavily striped, round headed, without ear tufts. with a large black chin spot bordered by two broad white patches”. A beautiful bird and it was a great way to finish off a sunny mid-Feb day in Squamish spending a bit of time photographing it. A few other shots can be seen here.
