The drive from Kyle of Lochalsh to Glasgow along the A82 took about 5 hours – although the road is divided, it is very narrow and there are no passing lanes. Traffic was extremely heavy as it is the main connector road with this part of Scotland. We stopped just before Fort William to see a very moving Commando Memorial. In 1940, when things were bleakest for Britain, Churchill ordered the formation of an elite, all volunteer force, to take back the initiative. Training for this force was established in the rugged country surrounding Fort William – a small memorial garden is near the monument and it was sad to see all the recent additions.
