On Saturday, January 9th, the recently opened Ground Up Climbing Centre in Squamish hosted the first ever Squamish Psych Fest (SPF). The SPF was an indoor SCBC sanctioned bouldering competition (www.sportsclimbingbc.ca), and the venue was packed with enthusiastic competitors and spectators. This was my first time photographing a bouldering competition and I was amazed at the athleticism of competitors – the sport demands a compelling blend of strength, flexibility, endurance and mental focus. Competitive climbing is rapidly gaining in popularity and attracts participants of all ages and ability, and this excellent facility in Squamish will no doubt further solidify the towns growing reputation with the climbing community. The twin sons of good friends of mine were competing (hence the bias in photos showing climbers from the North Vancouver Hive Climbing Club) – it was great to see so much young talent, and a sport where men and women seem to be equally represented. Some photos taken during the early afternoon session can be seen here – please share the link with anybody you think may be interested.
