Saturday, June 23rd was the 13th time Squamish’s Sikh community commemorated the martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji. The celebration started with a parade through downtown and included free food for everyone, prepared and served by members of the local Sikh community. It’s a popular and colourful event that brings together members of the community from different faiths and backgrounds. Despite the violent nature of martyrdom, a key message promoted by Makhan Singh Sanghera, President of the Squamish Sikh Society was “Be calm and peaceful, live a happy life… and don’t hurt anyone” – words we can all live by.
