On Saturday, Sept 7th, we had to drive into Vancouver and passed many of the 4,500 cyclists participating in the 10th annual Gran Fondo. The ride started from Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver, crossed the Lions Gate bridge and followed the beautiful Sea-to-Sky highway through Squamish and finally to Whistler. The total distance of the ride is 122 km with an overall elevation gain of 1900m – the fasted times were in the 3 hour, 15 min range. One north-bound lane on Highway 99 was closed to all traffic to ensure a safe ride for cyclists. As a result there were a few sections of alternating, one-way traffic which afforded an opportunity to watch (and photograph) the event.
